I photographed the sweetest family in their Sacramento home last week, and this session was one of those that just felt really special from beginning to end.
This family had recently moved from New York to Sacramento to be closer to family. They had been living in a tiny apartment before making the move, so their new home was a pretty big change for them. It was beautiful, but more than that, it felt like the beginning of a really exciting new chapter for their family.
And they had just welcomed a new baby boy into it.
One of my favorite things about in-home newborn sessions is getting to work with whatever a home naturally gives us. This home had some amazing light, especially in the living room where they had a beautiful skylight and vaulted ceilings. The light coming through was so soft and pretty, and it created this almost glowy, vintage feel in some of the images.
Mom's beautiful blue dress
Mom wore the prettiest dusty blue dress for the session. I love when a mom chooses something with a little color instead of feeling like she has to stick with neutrals. The blue worked so well with the neutral tones in their home and added just enough color without taking away from the images.
I also brought a few neutral wraps for their baby so Mom could choose the one she liked best. She picked her favorite, and I wrapped their little guy up nice and snug for some of his individual photos.
I love being able to take care of little details like this during a session. Parents don't need to have everything figured out before I arrive. I bring wraps, help with styling, and guide you through the session so you can mostly just focus on your baby.
A very sweet big brother
They also have a toddler boy, and he was honestly so sweet with his new baby brother.
You never quite know what you're going to get with a toddler during a newborn session. Sometimes they're running around, sometimes they're completely uninterested, and sometimes they surprise you. He was so gentle!
He gave his baby brother little kisses and touched him so softly. There was almost this little protective quality to the way he interacted with him, like he already knew "that's my baby brother and I'm his guardian"
Those were some of my favorite moments to photograph because you can't really pose that kind of thing. It's just who he was in that moment, getting used to being a big brother.
Finding all the pockets of light
We moved around the house throughout the session and used several different spaces.
The living room was perfect for some of the more light-filled images. Mom and Dad held their baby together while they closed their eyes, swayed, and just soaked him in. They didn't have to do much at all. I mostly just let them be together and photographed the little moments happening naturally.
The skylight above them made the light fall so beautifully across their faces, especially when Mom was holding the baby. Some of those images have this soft halo around them that I absolutely love.
We also spent some time in their master bedroom, using the bed for cozy family photos. I love using a bed during an in-home newborn session because everyone can relax a little. You can sit, snuggle, lean into each other, and focus on your baby without feeling like you're standing there trying to figure out how to pose.
There was also this little cozy nook next to a window that ended up being one of my favorite spots. Mom sat there with her baby resting on her knees and just looked down at him.
The beginning of something new
I think that's why I love in-home newborn photography so much-- this family had just moved across the country, settled into a new home, and brought a new baby into the mix. There was so much change happening in their lives all at once.
And now they have these photographs of what that looked like (toddler meeting his baby brother, Mom holding her little newborn in the new house, Dad cuddling his new bestie).
Those little things are what you'll miss later!
The newborn stage goes by so quickly, and your home changes too. Your babies get bigger, your family grows, and life moves on to the next thing.
I love that an in-home newborn session lets us document this exact version of your family—right where you are, in the home you're making memories in.
And for this family, it was the beginning of a really beautiful new chapter in Sacramento.
What Mom had to say about the experience...
"We hired Sydney for a newborn photoshoot for our second kiddo and she was AMAZING! Sydney has an incredible eye for capturing precious moments and we couldn’t be happier with our photos. She’s also super easy to work with and very personable. We will absolutely be hiring her again!" -Michelle G.
If you’re expecting a baby in the Sacramento area, I’d love to create something beautiful for you, too.
