There is something so special about photographing a baby right around their first birthday.

They are still very much a baby—those sweet, chubby cheeks, tiny hands, and big smiles—but you can also start to see their toddler personality emerging. They are curious, expressive, busy, and completely fascinated by the world around them.

That is exactly what made this first birthday and family session so much fun.

This sweet family was actually returning to me for their second session. The first time we worked together, we photographed their newborn outdoors, so getting to see their little boy again nearly a year later was such a treat. This time, we headed into the studio for a combination of first birthday portraits and family photos.

And honestly? One is such a wonderful age to document.

For this session, we started with family portraits together. We captured everyone looking toward the camera, then moved into more playful moments—lifting their little boy up, making him laugh, and letting him interact with Mom and Dad.

These in-between moments often end up being some of the family's favorite images because they feel genuine while still being beautifully composed.

From there, we spent some time photographing Mom and baby together, followed by Dad and baby.

These one-on-one portraits are something I always recommend including in a family session. Your child won't always be this tiny. You won't always be holding them this way. And those little expressions, cuddles, and connections with each parent are worth remembering.

First Birthday Photos That Capture More Than a Smile

First birthday photos don't have to be complicated.

In fact, some of my favorite baby portraits come from simply giving little ones the freedom to explore.

For this session, we gave him a few simple things to interact with—a little truck, a walker, stools, and letters spelling ONE. Instead of expecting him to sit still for every photograph, we let him explore while I documented all of those little details that make this stage so precious
