Figuring out what to wear for a family photoshoot can be.... well, confusing.
What you wear has a huge impact on the FEELING your photos convey-- if you're booking with me, it's because you want timeless, light-filled photos that convey loving family connection. As a family photographer Roseville CA, I know what kind of clothing conveys the light and airy vibe your going for.
I've put together this guide so you can gather some direction and inspiration for outfits that reflect YOUR light and timeless style during your session!

GENERAL TIPS

General tips for outfits that highlight your family in photos:
- NEUTRAL COLORS - I know it can feel boring to wear neutral colors, but the truth is that loud, saturated outfits steal the show in family photos. Instead of seeing smiles and connection, all you see is a bright red shirt in a photo. It's crazy but true!
- LIGHTER SHADES - A darker neutral shade is alright here and there, but I always recommend wearing mostly lighter shades. Why? Because in photos, our eyes are drawn to the most contrasting objects first. We want a viewer's focus will go straight to the HUMANS in the photo (not the clothes). In other words, we want the viewer to first notice the head and facial features-- which are the most emotive parts of the photo. Opt for delicate lighter colors for this effect!
- TEXTURED FABRICS - Chunky knits, flowing linen, courdoroy, or ruffle sleeves all create dynamic visual interest without stealing the focus of a photo. Make textures a priority when deciding on outfits.
- DAINTY PATTERNS - Opt for a smaller, more discreet patterns. I'd also go with pastel colors for the pattern!
- MINIMALIST ACCESSORIES - I'm sure you've gotten the point by now, but less is more when it comes to family outfits. Try minimalist-style jewelry, neutral nail color, and neutral shoes (so the focus remains on your love, joy, + connection!).

How to Build Your Outfits (From Start to Finish)

- My number 1 tip is always to DRESS MOM FIRST. Mom, these photos are your chance to get beautiful photos with your spouse and kids. Pamper yourself, and find a beautiful dress or outfit you feel confident in. Then, and only then, dress your spouse and kids around your outfit choice.
- For a light and airy vibe, go for a color palette that is bright, white, beige, and varies only slightly in hue and shade. You can add in subtle accent colors, but make sure they are also light, romantic, and pastel (think powder blue, lilac, pastel rose, etc).
- After you've determined your color palette, it's time to look for clothes that have texture. Texture creates visual interest in photos-- warmth, movement, and richness. Look for gauzy fabric, linens, lace, delicate cut-outs, delicate knits, pleating, subtle embroidered patterns, etc!
- As for shoes, go for neutral and comfortable, or go barefoot to keep a natural vibe.
I've created a helpful client style guide that I like to send to all of my clients. If you're interested in getting that direct advice, please fill out my inquiry below and I can send it over!
